Here is the latest technological invention, a hyperlens which can help us see tiny objects that escape even the most advanced optical systems.
The lens called as ‘metamaterial hyperlens’ may someday be used to detect some of the most lethal forms of cancer such as ovarian cancer.
Lead Author Natalia Litchinitser from University at Buffalo (UB) stated, “Today’s high-resolution endoscopes can resolve objects to about 10,000 nanometres. The hyperlens could improve that to at least 250 nanometres or better”.
The researchers have said that the technology will not be only be helpful from medical perspective but it could also lead to advancements and achievements in nanoelectronic manufacturing. It will boost the ability of the scientists’ to examine single molecules – a development with implications in chemistry, physics, biology and other fields.
Litchinitser added, “There is a great need in healthcare,nanotechnology and other areas to improve our ability to see tiny objects that elude even the most powerful optical systems. The hyperlens we are developing is, potentially, a giant step toward solving this problem”.
